The open housing, in which the tools are secured with an upper screw, is used for tools sharpened with the cutting edge perpendicular to the shaft, such as cutting and parting tools, roughing gouges, and large carving gouges up to a width of 50 mm. The housings are mounted using a lower screw, which also allows you to select the tilt angle.

To sharpen turning tools, we strongly recommend using the SVS-50 together with the TTS-100 Turning Tool Setter. This makes it possible to replicate the exact shape and sharpening angle every time. It also saves time, since only a minimal amount of steel is removed with each sharpening.
The Tormek machine’s wet grinding produces an extremely sharp cutting edge that will last longer. You will notice that a well-sharpened gouge cuts more easily and gives the wood a very fine surface, often eliminating the need for sanding.
Using the SVS-50 on a bench grinder
For a new turning tool that requires a considerable amount of steel to be removed in order to modify its profile, the most suitable device is the BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set used together with the SVS-50. In this case, take great care not to burn the cutting edge. After rough shaping on the bench grinder, place the tool in the device and switch to the Tormek machine for final sharpening of the cutting edge.
